Highgate Fair celebrates 170 years

The Highgate Fairgrounds will be a busy spot on Saturday, September 28.

"This year is our 170th, if you can believe it, Highgate Fair," said Jeff Mardling, President of the Highgate District Agricultural Society. "If you make your way out there you can't miss it. We've got lots happening, and it really all begins around the noon hour with the parade making its way from Main Street over to the fairgrounds."

The gates open at 8:30 a.m. and there are numerous events and activities planned.

"There'll be music all day, and of course, the barns are open with a lot of agricultural exhibits. Baking, the preserves, and this year as well, the Sheep Club with the 4H is having their achievement day at 1 o'clock," said Mardling. "We have a pie auction, where homemade pies are auctioned for fundraising. There is the mini-tractor pull this year, which isn't just for the kids. Last year we introduced it for the adults as well, and that was a huge hit."

Proceeds from the pie auction will go to support the Fair Board, and the Breakfast Clubs at Naahii Ridge Elementary School and St. Michael Catholic School.

The theme of this year's fair is "Big Dreams in a Small Town" and Mardling added that the Highgate Fair is a really special event for the town.

"For a one-day fair, and to go 170 years, it's just something special," said Mardling.
